my ariel sharon-a

The lingering question after lunch one day this week: who sang "My Sharona"? None of us could remember. So Phil googled the answer:
"My Sharona" was released on June 18, 1979 by the Knack, went gold in 8 weeks, and reached number one on the charts by September. Sharona was one of the bands groupies.
But P.J. had an alternate theory:
Actually, it was a Cold War era song entitled "Mei, Sharon-a" sung by an Israeli intelligence group, The Kneick. The song was an experiment in sending coded messages ... note how the beat follows the zero-one format of computer code ... and the words, which are more meaningless than in most rock songs, simply identify how to translate individual sections of the code. The idea was that Western rock differs so much from Middle Eastern music that the Syrians would never be able to work with it. Sort of like Gene Wilder trying to learn jive from Richard Pryor in "Silver Streak." Sharon-a was , of course, Ariel Sharon, to whom the test message was sent.
I dunno, maybe it was a slow day at work. This had me ROTFL.
